In a lot of Sydney, a conversation about heat pumps and solar hot water is largely academic. There is nowhere to put a heat pump with real airflow around it, or the roof faces the wrong way, or there is no room to move a cylinder at all.
These estates are different, and it is worth being plain about why. The blocks have outdoor space. The houses were designed and oriented together rather than squeezed onto whatever the subdivision left. That means the two constraints that rule these systems out elsewhere frequently are not constraints here.
A heat pump moves warmth out of the surrounding air into the tank rather than generating it, which is why it costs so much less to run. It costs more to buy, it makes some noise, and it wants genuine airflow around it. Solar needs roof area with a workable orientation and carries a boost for poor weather.
Neither is automatically right. What we will do is look at the property, tell you what will genuinely work there, and give you a view rather than a brochure. If straight storage is the sensible answer for your house, that is what we will say.

Both beat straight electric storage by a wide margin, and the gap between them comes down to your roof, your usage pattern and what you pay for electricity. We will give you our view rather than a chart, because a chart with someone else's tariff on it is not an answer.
Soft water is why they fail this particular way. In hard-water places a tank silts up with scale. Sydney's supply is not like that, so instead the sacrificial anode is consumed protecting the steel and the tank starts corroding once it is gone, or an element burns out. Both are frequently repairs.
On a unit you intend to keep, it is the best value job in this trade. It costs a fraction of the tank it protects and it is the only maintenance that genuinely adds years.
Replace. A weeping cylinder means the steel has gone and there is no patch for that. Shut it off and ring, because the water damage compounds daily.
Diagnosis is $120 to $250 and comes off the repair. An element or thermostat is $250 to $550. An anode is $300 to $600. A storage replacement is $1,400 to $2,800, and a heat pump or solar installation is quoted on the property.
